NEXT SALON: Book Launch & Birthday Bash!

Updated: Aug 12, 2023

We are delighted to invite you to the launch of

THE GOLDEN HOURS and for our 5th Birthday!

22nd August, 2023 : : 6.30pm ’til midnight

The Outhouse, 12a Broughton Street Lane, EH1 3LY

For the second time we have collaborated with Edinburgh Napier MSc Publishing to produce a unique collection of new writing, The Golden Hours.

Once again, we are honouring Edinburgh’s literary heritage by featuring emerging voices with writing from some of Scotland’s finest writers. We are also celebrating our 5th birthday since we took on running the Salon from Edinburgh City of Literature Trust.

The evening will comprise a welcome and reception, with wine and pizza from 6.30pm. At 7.30pm we will launch the book with introductions, readings, and votes of thanks. This will be livestreamed, lasting an hour. Finally, there will be Birthday Cake, book sales and signing, and a chance to win prizes!

Since launching Lost, Looking & Found we have made the Outhouse our new home. We’ve chosen the outside courtyard again as this gives us a fully accessible venue, and greater capacity (you can read more about access to the event at the end of this post and on our Access page). We have exclusive use of the whole venue. The Function Room, for those who wish to gather upstairs, is accessible via stairs only.

We will livestream the Presentation section of the evening from 7.30 until 8.30pm for those who are unable to attend in person. Please choose the ticket type for in-person, or livestream.

How it works...

6.30: Doors Open – drinks reception in the Bar

6.45: Gathering Entertainment in the Courtyard

7.00: Pizza Arrives! (sorry, not available on Zoom)

7.20: Open Zoom (details emailed to all ticket-holders)

7.30: Presentation: Book Launch, readings, thank-you!

8.20: Birthday Cake: Happy (5th) Birthday to us

Tickets are available from Eventbrite. Places for the in-person event are limited, but we warmly encourage those who cannot attend at The Outhouse to join us on zoom.

It is free to register for all of our events. We invite donations for the glass of wine, or encourage people to buy us a coffee to help fund our work. If you can’t afford to donate, you are still welcome. You can preorder The Golden Hours here, and our first anthology is still for sale here.

We look forward to seeing you in person or in the zoom-room.

Access Information for The Outhouse

Transport: there is no parking, but cars can drop off directly outside the door. There are good local tram and bus links, with stops close by, and the nearest train station is Waverley.

Entrances: there is ramp-free access into the bar with little obstruction, and a short ramp to enter into the Courtyard. There is a toilet for disabled use on the ground-floor level.

Reception: at the reception point, the welcome tables are at an easy-access level, and all Steering Group members have large-name badges so they can be easily identified. This gives people a chance to discuss any issues with us. We offer alcohol-free alternatives.

Seating: we will ensure spaces for wheelchairs, and while the Courtyard has a variety of seating arrangements, we will endeavour to ensure comfort for all of our guests.

Sight/Audibility: we have purchased technologies, and strive for the best in lighting, audibility, and video quality – both for those in the room and those watching on zoom.

Signage: notices will display exit points, pricing, donations, and permission regarding photography/recording of the event. This information is relayed to our zoom audience.

Catering: we ensure that as far as possible specific dietary requirements are considered, and all food is clearly labelled. We hope to have vegan pizza, and lactose/gluten-free cakes.

Weather: we cannot guarantee a rain-free experience. If we need to re-locate to inside the bar, we have exclusive use of the whole building. With our livestream arrangements we can ensure that everyone will be included in the presentation in some way.

Feedback: we welcome suggestions for making Edinburgh Literary Salon as open as possible.
