NEXT EVENT: Our Annual CYMERA Salon

Tuesday the 28th of May, 2024, 7pm, Live and on Zoom

It’s time for our yearly trip to the world of speculative fiction, with a visit from Cymera Festival – and friends.

Edinburgh is not only lucky enough to host a major mainstream Book Festival each year, but also fortunate to have folk looking out for more niche markets in the literary landscape. Science fiction, fantasy, and horror writing is extremely popular, so we’re delighted to welcome two leading exponents of this wide-ranging genre.

Our good friend, Ann Landmann, is the director of CYMERA, and was recently honoured by the British Fantasy Society at their annual Fantasycon event where she was awarded the Karl Edgar Wagner Award for her long term and ongoing contribution to Sci-Fi and Fantasy. We were delighted to present Ann with this award at our October Salon last year.

Ann will tell us about this year’s CYMERA, Scotland’s Festival of Speculative Fiction, which takes place in Edinburgh every June, live and online. It has charity status, a board of trustees, and a fantastic team of volunteers who help to make the festival happen.

We also welcome another long-standing friend of the Salon, Russell Jones. Russell is the director of Black Blade Literary, an Edinburgh-based editorial consultancy for writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror fiction. He has helped hundreds of writers to improve their stories, was deputy editor of Shoreline of Infinity (Scotland's best sci-fi magazine) from 2015-2023, and he has edited three successful writing anthologies.

We’ll hear all about Russell’s consultation work, as well as his own achievements in writing, which includes poetry and pets. He thinks humans are okay too, sometimes.

We’ll be at The Outhouse again, and after the usual drinks reception from 6.30, we’ll livestream the presentation on Zoom at 7pm, lasting around 40 minutes.

How it works...

6.30: Doors Open – drinks reception in the Function Room at the Outhouse

6.50: Open the Zoom meeting (details are emailed to all ticket-holders)

7.00: Welcome, and Introduction

We look forward to seeing you in person or in the zoom-room.

Accessibility Notice

Edinburgh Literary Salon is open to all those with an interest in all aspects of Literature, whether professional or personal, and to all parts of the industry: writers, publishers, booksellers etc. All are welcome, and events have free registration. While we aim to hold some events at accessible venues, our regular salon is in an upstairs room at The Outhouse. For this reason, we aim to livestream most events. If there is a problem accessing zoom, we will do what we can to assist. We strive to ensure adequate audibility, and straightforward registration. We invite positive feedback on how we can improve, even within our limitations as a non-funded organisation. We welcome open conversation.
